March 6, 2009 - Indoor Football League (IFL) Omaha Beef

The Omaha Beef are excited to welcome back James Poynter and Ron Jackson to their offensive line for the 2009 season. The Beef will also be gaining the additions of seasoned veterans Mike Erickson and Jake Gable. With these additions, the Beef should have one of the most effective offensive lines in the IFL.

At 6'4" 305 lb, Erickson joins the Beef with extensive professional experience. After one game with the Beef, the impressive Erickson was called up to the AFL. He spent the rest of the 2008 season with the New York Dragons.

Turfcats snag former Avenger in hunt for championship

Austin, TX – The Austin Turfcats signed former Los Angeles Avenger Robert Quiroga over the weekend.

The 6-foot-2-inch, 210 lbs. wide receiver and kick returner will play in the Turfcats’ inaugural season starting April 18.

“Quiroga is a threat anytime he gets near the ball,” said Turfcats General Manager and Vice President Ronald Oswalt. “He is an extra weapon in arsenal to ensure that we are the ‘fastest game on the turf.’”

Following the 2004 NFL Draft, Quiroga signed with the Baltimore Ravens and participated in their training camp.

Quiroga, a two-way player who spends most of his time on defense at “jack” linebacker, spent the last three seasons with the Los Angeles Avengers of the Arena Football League. He saw most of his time on offense when the Avengers where inside the opponents 10 yard line. Ten of Quiroga’s first 17 catches in 2007 were for touchdowns.

A three-year starter at wide receiver for Baylor University in Waco, Texas, Quiroga caught 131 passes for 1,478 yards and nine touchdowns in 46 games for the Bears. He also returned 31 kickoffs for 752 yards and two touchdowns. As a senior in 2003, he caught 42 passes for 490 yards and four touchdowns and was a first-team All-Big 12 Conference selection by both the “Waco Tribune-Herald” and the “Dallas Morning News.” Quiroga is one of only two players in Baylor history to record a 100-yard kickoff return. In 2003, he also became just the second player in Big 12 history to return two kickoffs for score in a single season.

“This was one of the pieces we wanted for our run in 2009,” Oswalt said. “Coach (Chris) Duliban and I are so excited by the addition of Quiroga. He has great talent and will be a cornerstone for the level of talent the Southern Indoor Football League has to offer.”

Quiroga attended Holmes High School in San Antonio, where he made first-team All-Greater San Antonio selection at both receiver and punter. He was listed among Texas’ Top 100 by the “San Antonio Express-News” and was an honorable mention all-state pick. Quiroga caught 51 passes for 1,061 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior and also scored two rushing touchdowns and three on punt returns. In addition, he threw for a pair of touchdowns. A member of the Holmes track & field team, he also ran the anchor leg on the 1,600-meter relay team that captured the Class 5A state championship in 1999.

I haven't seen a press release yet and he hasn't been around.
Maybe he's in camp somewhere and doesn't have time to post.

Bergeron to sign with Columbus Lions
Former Shaw star was 2005 AFL Rookie of the Year
By Chris White - cwhiteledger-enquirer.com --

The Columbus Lions’ offense managed to rally for a 50-49 victory Saturday night over the Carolina Speed, but that doesn’t mean the team is not looking for a little extra firepower.

Former Shaw receiver and indoor football standout Troy Bergeron will sign with the team this week, adding more depth to the Lions’ experienced receiving corps.

Bergeron, who was a three-year starter and a member of Shaw’s undefeated 2000 state championship team, was the 2005 Arena Football League Rookie of the Year after scoring 31 touchdowns on 105 catches while accumulating 1,372 yards for the Georgia Force. He also spent a season with the af2’s Columbus Wardogs and did stints at the Atlanta Falcons’ training camp and as a member of the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad.

“(Bergeron) is just a great receiver, and this is going to be the biggest signing ever for this league,” Lions coach Jason Gibson said.

Columbus will sign Bergeron at a press conference Wednesday.

Riders add three to defence

The Saskatchewan Roughriders bolstered their defence Thursday with three new signings.

Import defensive back Chris McKenzie, import linebacker Jerrell Freeman and non-import defensive back Brady Browne all agreed to contracts. Financial terms of the deals were not released.

Stampede Express signee hopes to put on a show for San Angelo

If his size wasn't a detriment in his part-time career, one of the San Angelo Stampede Express' new players could be known as Hollywood Hamm.

Jonathan Hamm, a 6-foot-7, 280-pound defensive end from Clark University in Atlanta, could play a big role in how well the Stampede perform during their first season under new head coach Sonny Cumbie in 2009.

A former standout for the New York Dragons of the now-defunct Arena Football League, Hamm signed as a free agent with the NFL's New Orleans Saints in 2007, but his time was cut short by a torn quadriceps muscle. After rehabbing for three months, Hamm

Don't know the particulars in this situation, all I know is they've got him listed on their roster.

Possibly it's a similar situation as Tom Hicks QB LA Avengers signing with the Boise Burn of the af2. He was no longer under contract to the the Avengers and signed with the Burn before the AFL suspended the season.

I'm not sure the date Brett Smith signed with the Dorados, I was told about quite awhile ago but hadn't found a link or him listed on their roster until now. I'm not sure if he was on the Desperados practice squad all year or only one day?

Former Cowboy to play QB for Stampede
Dantzler played running back, returned kicks in NFL

Thursday, March 05, 2009
BY JAMES PHILLIPS
Of The Patriot-News

With the regular season set to open March 13, the Harrisburg Stampede added another weapon Wednesday.

Stampede and AIFA owner John Morris announced the signing of former Dallas Cowboys and Atlanta Falcons player Woody Dantzler at a news conference at Arooga's Grille House & Sports Bar in Camp Hill.

With a smile on his face, Morris said, "Being the owner of the league, I know people.

"We're pleased with the players we have on the team, and it's going to be an exciting season. We're still selling game-day tickets for our final home game."

Besides playing for Dallas and Atlanta, Dantzler played in the Arena Football League for the Chicago Rush, with whom he won Arena Bowl XX in 2006.

He played at Clemson, where he became the first quarterback in NCAA history to pass for 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season (2001). Dantzler set 53 school records during his career.

"Harrisburg has a great group of guys, and I feel we have the potential to build a dynasty here," said Dantzler, who will play quarterback.

"I know there are a lot of expectations with me being here, but that will make me work that much harder to help this team win. Also, I want to help out in the community because with this platform it's my duty to reach out to the youth. Sports plays a major role with kids because they look up to us, and it's up to us to be role models."

The Stampede will open on the road against the defending league champion, the Florence (N.C.) Phantoms. The home opener is March 28 against the Baltimore Mariners.

Morris also announced that Arooga's will have its name on everything involved with the Stampede, including the field at the Farm Show Arena.

"Harrisburg is ready for indoor football," Morris said

Did he sign with the af2 AFTER the AFL season had been suspened or before?

Nelson had a very impressive career in the Arena Football League. Nelson spent the 2008 season with the Colorado Crush of the AFL. Despite missing four games with a knee injury, he still managed to lead the Crush in receiving with 1,358 yards and tied for first on the team with 30 touchdowns. Before the Crush, Nelson spent the previous two seasons with the San Jose SabreCats where in 2007 he led the team to an Arena Bowl Championship. Nelson racked up the awards in San Jose setting a team record with nine consecutive 100-yard receiving performances. In one game during the 2007 season he compiled 14 catches for 180 yards and four touchdowns. Nelson, a Coon Rapids, MN native, had an impressive career at St. Cloud State University. In college he had a streak of 34 consecutive games with a reception ending his career at SCSU as the all-time leader in TD receptions (43) and points (266).

Johnsen is excited about Nelson’s return stating, “In college I could tell Ben was going to be a very successful receiver, he was a special talent on the field … Nelson will be a key contributor with the Storm for the Strive for Five.”

Falcons tinker with roster
April 28, 2009
Posted by ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/nfc...inker-with-roster.html

The Falcons just announced some minor roster moves. They released defensive tackle Kindal Moorehead and defensive end Simon Fraser, two of the first free agents signed when coach Mike Smith and general manager Thomas Dimitroff took over last season.

Neither produced much and, after this year's draft, they became expendable. The Falcons also waived defensive back Darius Vinnett and offensive lineman Nathan Bennett.

The Falcons also signed wide receiver Troy Bergeron, who played for the Arena Football League's Georgia Force, a team that also is owned by Falcons owner Arthur Blank. Bergeron previously was in camp with the Falcons and spent time on Buffalo's practice squad.

Lions welcome Jerel Myers back to den
May 5, 2009 - Canadian Football League (CFL) B.C. Lions

(Vancouver) The BC Lions Football Club announced today that import wide receiver Jerel Myers has signed with the team.

Myers originally signed with the Lions in 2005 and went on to play in 15 games that season notching 36 receptions for 473 yards and two touchdowns.

The former LSU-grad departed the Lions for the AFL's New Orleans Voodoo in 2005. After Hurricane Katrina struck the New Orleans-area the club was forced to suspend operations and Myers found himself with the expansion Kansas City Brigade in 2006 where he led the club in both reception yards and all purpose yards. He also had the distinction of notching the club's first completion and first passing touchdown in franchise history.

Myers followed up with a successful 2007 campaign leading the Brigade with 900 kickoff return yards in addition to 1,183 receiving yards. He again led the team in all-purpose yards (2,200) and was second in touchdowns (22) while starting all 16 regular season games at wide receiver and setting a franchise record for longest kick return (55 yards).

Last season, Myers hauled in an astounding 136 passes for 1,310 yards and 19 touchdowns.

While at LSU, Myers played in 47 games ('99-'02) and set a school freshman record with 64 receptions for 854 yards and two touchdowns in 1999.

Blue Bombers ink import trio for training camp
5/6/09

THE Winnipeg Blue Bombers have bolstered their stable of recruits with the addition of three imports who will challenge for work when training camp opens next month.
Coming aboard are defensive lineman Aaron McConnell, whom we told you about last week, as well as receivers Tyrone Timmons and Chris Jackson.

McConnell (6-foot-3, 295, Pittsburg State) was All-American and All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association in each of his four seasons and last year finished with nine sacks for the Arena League's Colorado Crush.

He was named to the AFL's all-rookie team in 2005 as a member of the Nashville Kats.

Timmons (6-foot-4, 225, Mississippi Valley State) ranks second all-time in receptions and receiving yards at Mississippi Valley State behind NFL legend Jerry Rice and last year was the AFL's Rookie of the Year in 2008 after pulling in 23 passes for 267 yards and 13 TDs for the Tampa Bay Storm. This season he had been playing for the River City Rage of the IFL.

Jackson (6-foot-1, 200, Millsaps) went undrafted in the 2007 NFL Draft, but spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars and New Orleans Saints. (not either of the two Chris Jackson's of the AFL)

In his senior year at Millsaps, Jackson led his team in receiving yards, catching 65 balls for 693 yards and nine scores.

He also added 832 yards in kickoff and punt returns.

Chicago Signs AFL Standout Sippio
May 13, 2009 - Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) Chicago Slaughter

Hoffman Estates, IL -- The Chicago Slaughter, of the Continental Indoor Football League, has signed of Bobby Sippio, formerly with the Chicago Rush of the AFL and Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL. His signing helps strengthen the Slaughters' receiving corps in the wake of the injury to WR Donovan Morgan, who was leading the CIFL in most major WR statistical categories. This brings the number of former Rush players to eight, as he joins Morgan, QB Russ Michna, RB Nick Cosentino, WR Reggie Gray, DL Khreem Smith, LB DeJuan Alfonzo, and DB Dennison Robinson.

"We are very proud to have a player of Bobby's caliber on board," said Slaughter General Manager Alan Perkins. "In 2006, Bobby came in and helped the Chicago Rush win an AFL championship and we are hoping for the same result, here in 2009 for the Slaughter."

The 6'3", 215-pound WR from Western Kentucky University was a member of the Rush from 2006-2007, after being picked up from the Tampa Bay Storm. His best season came during the 2007 campaign, as he led the AFL in touchdowns with 53, to go with 125 receptions for 1739 yards. He was also a member of the Kansas City Chiefs organization during the 2007 season.

"I'm very happy to be returning to Chicago," said Sippio. "Once again, I get to play in front of the great Chicago fans. I hope to help the Slaughter stay on top and win a Championship."

The next home game for the Slaughter is this Saturday, May 16th, against the Wisconsin Wolfpack at the Sears Centre. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05pm. The team will honor Head Coach Steve McMichael after the game for his induction into the National Football Foundation's College Hall of Fame. It will also be Fan Appreciation Night, as the team will give away a trip to Puerto Vallarta, sponsored by World Wide Traveler, along with many other great prizes.

The Slaughter (9-0) is the lone undefeated team in the CIFL, and has clinched a spot in the playoffs. For more information on the Chicago Slaughter, please call the team office at (847) 310-3190 or visit the team website at www.ChicagoSlaughter.com.

Rushing down from Chicago
Pirates bring in AFL veteran Hohensee to usher in new era of indoor football in Peoria

May 14, 2009

The Peoria Pirates of the af2 put in a rush order this week for an arena football coach who could turn around their floundering af2 team.

They delivered late Thursday, confirming source reports that longtime Arena Football League and Chicago Rush coach Mike Hohensee has been signed as Peoria’s new head coach.

“We set out to get an established coach from at least the AFL level and we did that in a big way,” said Pirates local managing owner Jim Foster as he flew back from league meetings in Texas. “I don’t think there’s ever been a coach of a championship AFL team who moved back down to the af2, and we’ve got one.

“He’s contemporary, effective with his players and commands respect. We wanted a guy who could give the organization a professional image, and Mike Hohensee does that.”

Hohensee will debut next week when Peoria hosts Quad City.

“The ownership in Peoria has asked me to come in there, and I think it’s a good fit,” said Hohensee, 48. “I’m not the save-all. It’s going to take energy — I’ve been working out a lot just to keep sane, going crazy for a coaching job. It’s going to take players, staff, the whole organization.

“I’m not coming there to be loved by the community. My mission is to get the community to fall in love with this game.

“I know all about the silver-and-black of the Pirates and their tradition. I’ve been in arena football from the day it started, I love it, respect it, want it to thrive.”

Leos ink two defensive backs
May 14, 2009 - Canadian Football League (CFL) B.C. Lions

(Vancouver) The BC Lions Football Club announced today that import defensive backs Mil'Von James and Trestin George have signed with the team.

After attending San Jose State from 2002 to 2005, George signed as an undrafted free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2006, but was released after training camp. He then signed with the AFL's San Jose SaberCats and appeared in eight games as a rookie in the team's 2007 championship season, notching nine tackles and 872 yards on 37 kickoff returns. Last season, he appeared in five games and registered one tackle.

Riders add a pair to the offensive line
May 14, 2009 - Canadian Football League (CFL) Saskatchewan Roughriders

Saskatchewan Roughrider head coach Ken Miller announced today the Roughriders have signed import offensive linemen
Bobby Harris and Andrae Townsel to new contracts. Financial details were not released.

Harris (6'3 - 310 lbs) was a two-year starter at Ole Miss in 2004 and 2005 where he was a teammate with current Rider Belton Johnson. He signed as a free agent with the San Francisco 49ers in 2006 and spent the 2007 season as the starting left tackle for Frankfurt in NFL Europe. Harris spent last season with the Arena League's Orlando Predators. In his rookie season, Harris was elected a team captain and was named to the league's all-rookie team and was also named an all-league performer.

"Bobby is a young man we have been pursuing for the past couple of years," stated Miller. "He has excellent feet for a big man, and he's a polished pass protector. Bobby has been a two-time all-star at the pro level (NFL Europe and Arena) and at only 25 should continue to improve."

D-line imports face battle
Calgary Herald
Thursday, May 14, 2009

The battle to replace Eddie Freeman, Charleston Hughes and Howard Hodges on the Calgary Stampeders defensive line is on.

The Stamps announced Wednesday the signings of three import defensive linemen, who'll be in the mix at training camp beginning on June 7 at McMahon Stadium.

Getting the call for the Stamps were Malik Jackson, Odell Willis and Remond Willis, while the Stamps also released two other defensive linemen from their roster, Montey Stevenson and Ryan Riddle, neither of whom saw action with the Canadian Football League team.

"We're happy with the Canadian depth and talent we have on the defensive line," said Stamps coach and general manager John Hufnagel. "But there will be significant changes to the import content on the line in 2009. This will be a very competitive area in training camp and we're looking forward to seeing how these three players measure up."

Odell Willis, 24,played for a pair of Arena Football League 2 teams last year, the Peoria Pirates and Green Bay Blizzard. The six-foot-two, 265-pound former West Georgia Brave produced 13.5 sacks in 11 games in Green Bay.

Go 2 Guy: Gesser's new job a big story for this Coug
By JIM MOORE <mailto:jimmoorethego2guy@yahoo.com> SPECIAL TO SEATTLEPI.COM
Usually when a high school football coach is hired, it gets a couple of paragraphs in the back of the sports section. He doesn't make headlines until his team does, at some point down the road.
But Eastside Catholic's hiring of a new coach is different because the Crusaders landed the Go 2 Guy's all-time favorite Coug. Plus the P-I doesn't have a sports section to stuff this story into the back of anymore. So here it is online with a little blue headline.
If it were up to me, I'd banner this sucker with the biggest type I could find, or at least boldface it to let everyone know that Jason Gesser has taken over as head coach at Eastside Catholic.
Then again, if it were up to me, I'd rather be reporting that Gesser is taking over as head coach at Washington State, which remains his dream and mine -- though in his dream, he sees it happening a decade from now, a lot farther in the future than my dream, as in 10 years farther.
(I'm trying to stay on board with WSU head coach Paul Wulff, but last season has me teetering big-time. Gesser's a lot more on board than I am, thinking the Cougs will be competitive in '09 and fighting for a bowl berth in '10.)
"Oh yeah, I still have the dream. Someday, someday," Gesser said. "Washington State, that's my home, that's my place. But I'll tell you right now, I plan to be (at Eastside Catholic) for a solid 10 years. I want to build a dynasty."
Gesser, who will turn 30 on May 31, led the Cougars to two of their three consecutive 10-win seasons and the 2003 Rose Bowl in which he tried to beat the Sooners on one leg. In Jeff McQuarrie's "Legends of the Palouse" documentary, Gesser almost tears up when he talks about what WSU means to him, so whatever he does, wherever he goes, it's always going to get a thumbs-up in this space, even his work at FSN.
Let's be honest about his part-time job as a Pac-10 football TV analyst -- he could use a little more polish, but he's wonderfully candid and just being himself.
That's what helped him land the job at Eastside Catholic. He heard about the opening through Interlake coach Sheldon Cross, a buddy of his who helps him run Jason Gesser Elite Sports prep football camps.
Gesser was the quarterbacks coach in 2006 at Federal Way High School and the offensive coordinator at Franklin Pierce the past two years. He also played indoor football for the Utah Blaze.
When the Arena League went out of business, Gesser had the time for a new opportunity, which Eastside Catholic provided.
Initially he wasn't sure if he should pursue the job, but his wife was ecstatic about it, telling him "you'll kick yourself" if you don't apply. So he did.
Gesser met with two different groups for more than three hours at the private Catholic school on the Sammamish Plateau. Before the interviews, he remembered what his dad told him: "Be yourself and be honest. If they like you, they like you. If not, it's not meant to be."
They were concerned about his age, but Gesser reminded them that the Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl with Mike Tomlin, a coach who was 36 at the time. Other than that, Gesser wowed them.
"He was just a high-energy guy," said Eastside Catholic athletic director Lance Gatter. "He came in and sold us on himself. We're hoping he can continue to bring a bunch of energy to Eastside Catholic."
Gatter remembered that Franklin Pierce beat the Crusaders in the state playoffs two years ago, outwitting Eastside defensive coordinator Steve Chmiel, who's now the DC at Skyline.
"At that point we felt we had the best defensive coordinator in the state, and Jason really gave Steve fits," Gatter said. "We think he's up for the challenge. We checked with his references, and they all felt he could dig down and get the job done."
There's already a dynasty of sorts just up the hill at Skyline, and Gesser wants one of his own. Never mind that Eastside Catholic graduated 31 seniors from its Metro League title team -- Gesser said: "We'll contend for, if not win" the championship again.
"I want to be like Skyline and Bellevue, the upper echelon," he said. "My goal is go after the big dogs and start knocking them off."
Eastside Catholic reminds him of Saint Louis, the Catholic high school he attended in Hawaii, a school of "great faith and family values." He also wants it to be like Saint Louis in football -- Gesser was 24-0 as a starting Qquarterback.
This spring he's thinking bigger picture, running Sunday football camps at Interlake with the hope of elevating in-state players to prominence on the national scene. He thinks with proper development that Washington kids can be viewed the same way Texas kids are now.
"We have the players, we just need to get the platform," Gesser said. (For more information, visit jasongesser.com)
His camps produced five quarterbacks who played for teams that beat Franklin Pierce last year, and more of his graduates could beat him on Friday nights this season.
"I know that, I understand that," Gesser said. "But at the end of the day, Washington football will be getting better, whether they're on my team or someone else's team."
Eastside Catholic will be a tough job and commute for Gesser, who doesn't want to sell his house in Puyallup in this market. He lives there with his wife, Kali, and 5-year-old daughter, Jordyn, and 2-year-old son, Kolten.
He's not sure what kind of offense he'll install, figuring it could be a one-back or something else depending on the personnel.
"It will be fun, I'll tell you that," Gesser said. "This is the next chapter of my life."

May 19, 2009 - United Football League (UFL)

RUTHERFORD, NJ (May 19, 2009) - At a recent UFL executive meeting in Orlando, Commissioner Michael Huyghue, along with each of the head coaches, announced the addition of many highly qualified assistant coaches to their rosters for the League's upcoming "Premiere" season. Commissioner Huyghue also named San Francisco Head Coach Dennis Green as Chair of the UFL's Competition Committee, a role he had previously held in the NFL.

"One of the keys to the overall success of the UFL is the high caliber head and assistant coaches that we have been able to attract," said Commissioner Huyghue. "The addition of these highly talented individuals, along with the naming of Coach Green as Chair of the League's Competition Committee, are further indicators of our goal of producing a high quality product on the field that within time will be indistinguishable from other professional football leagues currently playing."

In Orlando, under the guidance of Head Coach Jim Haslett, the following coaches were publicized:

Bill Bradley, Secondary
Chuck Bresnahan, Linebackers

AFL Linebacker Signs With Lions

The Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football Association are proud to announce the signing of linebacker Eric Johnson (6'0 241, Nebraska) formally of the AFL's Georgia Force.

As a rookie in 2007, Eric played and started in 11 games for the Force posting 35.5 tackles, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and one interception. In 2008, Johnson tallied 3.5 tackles and one sack in two games before being waived by the Force.

The former Cornhusker signed as undrafted free agent with the Oakland Raiders back in 2000 and participated in Super Bowl XXXVII where he scored a touchdown by returning a blocked punt for 13 yards against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In four seasons with the Raiders (2000-03), Eric tallied 23 tackles and one interception. Johnson also spent time with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons (2004) and Arizona Cardinals (2005) before signing with the Georgia Force in 2007.

"To add the athletic ability of Eric that posses from going sideline to sideline is a strong addition to our defense," says Head Coach Jason Gibson. "Bringing in Johnson should help put our defense at a championship level."

Cool! Great to have another Force player down in C'bus!

I'll add him under "Former AFL coaches & Players"

After the Crush he was on the AFL Wranglers staff in 2007
Last year he was head coach of the woeful Amarillo Dusters and took them to the Conference Championship game only to be released

Where are all of the people hating on the Wranglers for letting Skip Foster get away after a 10-6 season and their first ever playoff game ? (which they were spanked and embarrassed). Skip wasn't fired but refused to stay.

Now we've got a worse team taken to the conference Championship game only to lose his job in the off season. Sounds like it was more about hating on the Wranglers and Mr MacGregor than it was Skip - lol

EDIT:
Have you heard anything about Rush Player Robert Boss OL signing with the Slaughter?
A guy on ArenaFan had heard that but I can't find a link and he's not on the roster.
The Slaughter might want to change the banner on their website, coach Steve's picture scares me everytine I go over there. that's one fugly guy - lol

It looks like the Rush fans are the only ones that got to see their AFL team this season as the Rush players took the slaughter to a 12-0 regular season record. It only proves the Indoor leagues can't hold the jock strap of an AFL player - lol
