The one good thing (and some say bad thing) about Florida State has been that they have kept their coaching staff together for so long. They've had people come and go but for the most part, they've kept guys on for 18-20+ years under Bowden and that has kept a certain amount of continuity that many other programs have lacked (It's also a source of criticism of Penn State's staff under Paterno). While many younger coaches will fire their coaches at the drop of a hat, a guy like Paterno or Bowden will try to recruit to their coaches' strengths and that's what's made their programs so successful and really, their blips on their resume have had to do with the choices in players that have embarrassed the programs more than their talent (Though, both have had several years where their talent wasn't up to the levels of their past studs - something that is apparent at Florida State, lately).
Bowden must make a choice on a new defensive coordinator and along with head coach in waiting, Jimbo Fisher, he must decided whether to go for a hot coordinator, who will leave as soon as a head coaching job comes open or one who is older and will never be considered the hot candidate but will stay loyal to the program for years and put a solid plan that the coach can follow for his tenure. Even with a hot coach, it's going to take a couple of years to turn this program around on defense and if he leaves and he isn't able to convince any of the assistants to leave with him, maybe the long term solution would be for one of them to take over and use his system to recruit the kind of players that are needed to play in his system.
